A similarly covered CD, only in pink (and released two years later), is also called "The Best Of" but focuses more on the group's album tracks. The vinyl version contains the (sometimes preferable) single mixes the CD and cassette contain 12" remixes, good for the collector, bad on the patience. But soon, after their break with ZTT and joining China Records, it wasn't long until they were parodying themselves and trying to score pop hits with a recognizable "sound." Singles featured older pop stars trying to score a hit again ( Duane Eddy on "Peter Gunn," Tom Jones on "Kiss"), current celebrities riding their own popularity wave (Max Headroom), or cover songs gussied up with a few more car starting sounds (the made-for-hire "Dragnet '88," used in the regrettable film remake). It was like Dada had invaded the charts, circa 1984. The 1-2-3 rush of "Beat Box," "Moments in Love," and "Close (To the Edit)" make this CD worth the money already - at the time of their release, these singles swiped electronic music back from America (by way of Germany) and cut the whole thing up with ridiculous samples (a car starting, the omnipresent orchestral hit) and enjoyable art school posturing. This edition again featured the tracks of the original UK cassette and appended Worship, an early version of Who's Afraid with different track order, extra tracks and alternate mixes. In addition to a wide CD release, a limited edition of 500 copies on blue vinyl was released for Record Store Day. In April 2011, ZTT released a deluxe edition of Into Battle, again compiled by Peel. This set restored the original version of "Beat Box" and included the 5:10 edit of "Moments in Love" from the cassette issue of the EP, neither of which had been officially released on CD before. Into Battle appeared in full on disc four of the 2006 Art of Noise box set And What Have You Done with My Body, God?, which was conceived, researched and compiled by Ian Peel. In 2003, the original Into Battle EP was issued on CD for the first time in Germany, but the release included "Beat Box (Diversion One)", as on Who's Afraid, rather than the original EP mix. In 1986, portions of Into Battle, Who's Afraid, and the "Moments in Love" 12-inch single were combined to form the Daft compilation. ![]() ![]() Two songs from the EP, " Beat Box" and " Moments in Love", were subsequently featured on the group's first LP, Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?, in altered form. Into Battle constructed tracks using early sampling techniques centred on the Fairlight CMI workstation, which at the time was state-of-the-art technology. The record represented the first installment in ZTT's Incidental Series (catalogue number ZTIS 100). Into Battle with the Art of Noise is a 1983 EP by the Art of Noise-its first release, and also the first release by ZTT Records.

![]() "She decided to attack the closest vehicle to her, which was mine. We all dispersed, and when she couldn’t hit one of us, she was running to my SUV. “I could see her teeth just clenching in her mouth,” Ramos said. In her white gym shorts and gray hoodie, Spears emerged from the Mercedes wielding a large green umbrella. “It was like a bull ready to bust out of the chute.” ![]() “She looked at me really angry, like smoke was coming out of her nose,” Ramos said. It was a suggestion Spears - who for a short time had even dated a pap - did not take kindly to. ![]() Then he recalled telling her through the window: “Maybe when you come back, we can talk to you.” “We thought maybe she had to use the restroom, so we agreed to turn off our cameras,” Ramos told BuzzFeed News. ![]() “That is when it all went to shit,” Harrison said. With the explosion of TMZ, photographers started the once taboo practice of getting out of their cars and confronting stars in person. Gone were the days of long-lens shooting, in which celebrities went about their day unaware they were participating in a photo shoot. The competition also eroded previous rules of engagement in public spaces. Restaurants and bars regularly patronized by the stars were often crowded with paparazzi and reporters posing as casual vacationers. Some teamed up as fake couples at exclusive resorts to get candid celebrity shots. Going undercover became modus operandi for paps trying to get a leg up on the competition. Still another spent a whole day blending into the side of a hill to get a shot of Sandra Bullock tying the knot with Jesse James. When Mary Kay Letourneau was to marry Vili Fualaau - the man she was convicted of raping when he was her 12-year-old student - a pap disguised himself in a 3D Ghillie camouflage suit designed to resemble heavy foliage to photograph the event at a winery in Washington state.Īnother pap hid in a bush for a day to capture Avril Lavigne getting hitched to Sum41 singer Deryck Whibley, and one tried to hire a cherry picker to get high enough in a tree to shoot Julia Roberts' nuptials to Danny Moder in Taos. “We were making more money than we knew what do with,” he said.Īll that money drove paps to extreme lengths to get the photo. Harrison rattled off some of his own examples: $10,000 for a snap of Ben Affleck buying books on poker, $20,000 for Britney Spears getting her nails done, $10,000 for Faith Hill drinking a milkshake at Johnny Rockets. They were accompanied by "kill fees," in which an outlet paid top dollar for celeb photos - not to publish, but to keep them out of the hands of competitors. Bidding wars that pushed prices into the six figures were frequent. The ensuing competition fueled a frenzied demand for “Stars Just Like Us” photos to fill the surge in magazine page counts. A short while later, other celebrity magazines launched - In Touch Weekly, Life & Style Weekly, and OK!. The boom began in 2000, when Us Weekly went from monthly to weekly and started a head-to-head war with People magazine. “It was like a gold rush," Harrison said. The big payoff at the time was still in the story-driven photos - baby bumps, new couples, affairs, arrests, vacations, stints in rehab.īut soon, the stars became “just like us,” and everything changed. So I would go down to the Baywatch set and take pictures of Pamela Anderson, sell it, and roam around town.”Īt first, there was little interest in Harrison’s brand of photography. Being in L.A., a lot of things were being filmed. “That just seemed to be where the money was. “No one was just roaming the street finding celebrities and taking pictures of them,” Harrison said. Harrison wasn’t good at “doorstepping” - waiting outside a celebrity’s home and then tailing them around town - so he developed his own niche, one that would come to dominate the tabloid circuit. “Maybe there was five of us,” he told BuzzFeed News. When he started his career as a pap in 1995, Harrison said there was hardly any money to be made. At a husky 6 feet 8 inches tall, Giles Harrison cuts a formidable figure, especially when he’s wielding a foot-long, 500 mm lens. ![]() At least I did before I tore the peroneus tertius tendon in my foot. That's for roughly 6 to 10 miles of running up and down the mountain of the day. Around 40 - 45 lbs when I'm feeling randy. I also routinely carry some ballast to add to the challenge. Plus I get a large charge from jumping boulders and rocks and downed trees (I know, strange pleasures at 54 years young). It keeps my blood pressure and weight in check and legs and heart in shape. He actually likes to hike! OMG! Could it be that someone has slightly different interests than the majority of these lazy pilots that only wanna fly? It would appear that the few that have responded to Tobias have not bothered to understand his first post. Who needs to hike it in? Work on improving your cross country flying skills instead. I have also flown much higher, longer, and farther with a hang glider alone than with any powered unit (powered harness or trike). I have looked down on wildlife, hikers, backpackers, cross-country skiers, and motorcyclists who were no doubt shocked to see me soaring above a location that had taken them perhaps days to reach. I have overflown lava beds, volcanoes, lakes, deserts, waterfalls and glaciers. In my hang glider I have traversed innumerable Wilderness Areas and National Parks, locations not accessible by any other means. The problem is, most pilots would rather think of elaborate methods of hiking a glider than take the time and effort to make themselves into a good enough pilots to soar their glider virtually anywhere they want to go. ![]() It easily feasible to take off from a relatively nearby hang gliding site and soar many miles (or hundreds of miles) into remote back country. Hang gliders are capable of flying deeper into the wilderness than you are capable of hiking. My response to this sort of question is: "Why do you need to backpack with a hang glider?" Īlso, there's a whole subforum here devoted to it.ĭisclaimer: I have not yet flown FLPHG, though I have done enough research and talked to enough people who have to decide to buy one. He's written a couple articles about it that give a lot more detail. Here is a good site maintained by one of my mentors who has been flying FLPHG for several years now. If you buy new and pay for training you can easily spend $8k+, assuming you already have a wing. No need to fly close to terrain seeking ridge lift (This is a HUGE factor for me, as I am very risk averse)Ĭost. If you live at high altitude, the motor, prop, and your hang glider are all less efficient and you may not have enough performance to fly, especially on hot and humid days.Ĭan fly in stable air if you don't like turbulence. Also, you have the option to just fly around under power all the time, if you just want to sight see. Once at altitude, you can shut the motor off and fly it like a regular hang glider, if you start to sink out, you can re-start it (If you bought the electric start option) and motor back up. Yes, you can take off from a flat field with no slope. It's a harness with a motor that can be used with most existing ordinary hang gliders. You'd most definitely want to do this with at least one strong mate as well as good comms for the area's conditions (cell phone, 2-meter radio, etc). The point is, even if you are thinking about humping a glider AND other gear up a mountain, you'd better be well versed in the mountain's launching area and conditions and possess advanced piloting skills. Same with landing, though a good XC pilot can usually locate an appropriate spot of clear field and land safely most of the time. But it's been done, so it's not impossible. Especially if the 'launch' is newly explored without any previous local knowledge. Launching off an unknown mountain launch site without any local knowledge of conditions is folly for even expert pilots. Other HG manufacturers also have short-packed gliders, though some like Moyes are not so short. Assembling the short-packed glider will likely take you some hours in good working conditions, longer in unimproved conditions. Short pack Falcons can be as short as 6 feet long in packed condition, though at around 45 to 54 lbs they will give you a good workout while climbing up the mountain. It takes a bit to reassemble the glider from it's short pack condition, but it's do-able. But you have to order it built for "short packing." Yes, in fact, Wills Wing produces a collapsible hang glider. ![]() ![]() The downside is that butane is often used as a propellant in the aerosol cans. Coupled with the effectiveness of the product, this has caused people to set off repeated bug bombs. Even worse, as Koehler explained, is that there have been cases where people haven’t properly sized the amount to the room size. Koehler explained that because there is little to no air circulation in the small spaces where roaches reside, the insecticide won’t reach them. This is a blanket treatment that is set off in an unoccupied room on the theory that the space fills with insecticide and kills off the roaches. Total release foggers (aka bug bombs), such as the Harris Indoor Fogger, are another category we dismissed without testing. Each little canister has roughly 150 bait applications in it, so you can bait in a lot of different places, increasing your chances of success. The Terro bait powder is also a very economical choice if you’re dealing with a larger infestation or if you might be dealing with roaches in the long term. One thing we appreciated in testing is that a powder won’t get all goopy if you accidentally put your hand in it or rub up against it. Other powders we tried come in larger squeeze bottles and are much harder to portion out in small amounts. The applicator nozzle is very precise and good for getting into hard-to-reach areas, like under the fridge. This powder bait comes in a pump dispenser with a 2-inch-long applicator, and each pump dispenses less than 1/16th of a teaspoon of bait powder. And though it’s not quite as neat as a bait station and isn’t able to stick to a vertical surface, it’s effective if you can apply it right where roaches are living. ![]() The Terro T530 Roach Bait Powder is another option. Gels are effective too, but the enclosed Terro station has far less potential to be messy or accidentally consumed by a pet or child. This way you can place the bait station close to where roaches are living. The Terro stations are also one of the few that come with adhesive strips, so they can be mounted on a vertical surface. The top of the bait station is clear, so it’s easy to monitor how much bait is left and whether the roaches are even entering in the first place. The Terro bait stations have a number of features most roach baits lack, which make them the most convenient and easy-to-use option we’ve found. The delayed action of the poison increases its overall effectiveness, since it allows a roach to pass the poison to other roaches before the roach dies (and even afterward if you want to go straight to the disgusting details on how that works, be our guest). The Terro T500 Multi-Surface Roach Baits are little cartridges filled with an insect bait-a mixture of food and a slow-acting poison. ![]() ![]() The most recent episode is below, as is a special one-shot episode that was published as a bonus perk of the Kickstarter.
